Gyoza- The Japanese Dumpling

Humans love dumplings…steamed boiled or fried, wherever you are in the world you will find a dumpling in one form or another. From the solid cheesy delights sitting in English stews to the light delicate steamed dumplings found in Chinese dim sum, food wrapped in some form of dough is always a winner. Here at Yuhoki, our favourite is of course gyoza, light and flavourful these little bites of heaven far surpass any other dumpling. With a rich and interesting history to match their flavour, in this blog, we will be taking a sneak peek into the wonderful world of gyoza from the Chinese origins to the modern day gyoza bars.

Half-moon shaped, gyoza are a light dumpling made with a thin sheet of wheat flour dough and filled with a variety of gorgeousness, ranging from the traditional pork to a more out there, cheese! However, don’t panic there are lots of tasty fillings that fall between pork and cheese, here at Yuhoki we offer chicken, prawn and of course vegetable. The most popular method for cooking unique to gyoza is they are first fried in a pan, then water is added, and the pan sealed to gently steam them. However, they are also yummy just steamed or deep fried, it all depends on how healthy you’re feeling.

Originating from Chinese Jiaozi gyoza have become very popular, and almost as synonymous with Japan as ramen. Served in a variety of places from ramen shops and street festivals to trendy new gyoza bars, gyoza can be eaten as an accompaniment to a meal, as an appetizer or even as a standalone meal. They are traditionally eaten with a soy-based sauce seasoned with rice vinegar and chilli oil. However, with the increased filling varieties, the variety of sauces has also increased, our Ebi Gyoza, for example, wouldn’t work with such a sharp sauce.

Ebi Gyoza

We just love our Ebi Gyoza deep fried, it works really well as a decadent prelude to one of our sushi selections or alongside Edamame and Mixed Tempura as a light lunch selection. Perfect enjoyed with a cold glass of white wine in the sunshine.
