Japanese Curry Rice - Chicken & Prawn

Japanese Curry Rice - Chicken & Prawn

Japanese curry rice is a dish that combines rice with Japanese curry. Curry as a condiment is well known, the word curry was derived from the noun “Kari” and many cuisines from around the globe have curry as an accompaniment to vegetables or meat. Since its introduction into Japan by the British in the Meiji era, curry became a perfect match for Japanese rice. Being creamy and thick, curried rice is among the favourites of dishes as can be seen on many dining tables, so much so that it can be aptly called a “National Dish” in Japan.

Interestingly, in the its early days in Japan, curry powder was mostly imported from Great Britain and because of this, any curried food was quite expensive. In 1903, a chemist in Doshomachi Osaka found a way to produce curry themselves. In those days, people in Osaka had a habit of eating rice left over from the night before and so curry, being relatively easy to prepare, became very popular.

There are many varieties of curry. In terms of colours, there is red curry, green curry and yellow curry. Red curry is common in South East Asia: its taste is spicy and strong. Green curry, with added lemon skin, is slightly spicy with a sour taste and is common in Thai cuisines. Yellow curry is mild and versatile and is commonly used in Japanese curried dishes. Compared with Indian curry, Japanese curry has a much simpler taste. Japanese curry has developed into having a unique sweet and savoury taste. Onion, potatoes or carrot are added as vegetables in Japanese curry and for meat, it’s normally pork, beef or chicken; seafood is also used.

Yuhoki’s offers five choices of curry dishes: Chicken Kastu curry, Beef curry, chicken curry, prawn Kastu and vegetable curry. Chicken Kastu curry rice is the most popular at lunchtime. Many loyal chicken curry fans choose the dish every day. The fragrant and crispy chicken is cut into strips that combined with a thick and creamy curry sauce and vegetables to make a mouth-watering lunchtime favourite. It is worth mentioning that Chicken Kastu Curry is in Yuhoki’s special lunch menu – portions are generous at bargain prices. Highly recommended!

Another curry dish that is highly recommended is the Prawn Kastu Curry: it is served in a compact arrangement, with the vegetable salad and rice placed on the side and the centre is occupied by fried prawn with curry sauce. Because the prawn is covered with breadcrumbs, it is crispier than Tempura prawn. The battered fresh prawn, covered with Japanese curry, a combination of crispiness and creaminess, all adds to the delicious taste. This is indeed an appetizing dish, with a mix of potatoes, carrots, and the sweet and mild taste of the curry and the full grains of rice.

According to American publication “Daily Science”, curry contains curcumin which is beneficial to the heart and its consumption can help prevent heart failure.
